Meet Karen

Karen Doherty is an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker with more than 25 years of experience. She has extensive experience working wholistically and systemically with people of all ages from a wide range of cultures and identities, towards maximum health, wellbeing and happiness. Karen is committed to lifelong learning and development, is trained in many therapeutic modalities and is able to adapt therapy to meet the needs of individuals.

Karen has worked in a range of public sector services including NSW Health Sexual Assault Services, The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses To Child Sexual Abuse. She is a Registered Witness Intermediary and has worked on a Redress Panel. Karen has worked in private practice for the past 5 years and is a founding member and Director of Lilly Pilly Counselling Inc.

She has a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Social Work from Sydney University and have completed post graduate training and workshops in child and adolescent mental health, peri natal metal health, narrative therapy and CBT.

She uses a variety of evidence based approaches in my work with clients who have symptoms of trauma, anxiety and depression including sensory motor psychotherapy techniques and cognitive behavioural therapy. Her professional development and practice is framed around the impact of early experiences on the brain, on the life course and on future steps toward wellness.

She also works with clients who are struggling with relationships, work, parenting and interpersonal issues.

As a mental health social worker, she is able to see people who have been referred by their GP so they can receive a Medicare rebate. She is a registered provider with the Central and Eastern Sydney Primary Health Network and provides Psychological Support Services for clients referred under this scheme. She is an approved counsellor for NSW Victims Services and see victims of crime under this scheme.
